Ron Katt asked whether the lake on the Baum property
is a permanent thing, or whether it will be removed once the reclamation is
completed. Baum stated that he is not
positive, but it is most likely that it will stay. Gary Alkire from Buckeye mining added that normally,
the retention ponds stay after the reclamation.
Gary Alkire stated that being in the mining
industry, the turning down of the mining permit at the Baum farm is one that of
course concerns him and the company he works for. He is not saying it was right or wrong to
turn the permit down, but he would like to offer is expertise to the BZA and
the Trustees if they have questions concerning mining whether for his company
or in general.
Baum noted that the two big fears from the residents
were the possibility of well contamination(drinking water), and the need for
some blasting.
Alkire stated that there are mechanisms in place
that protect the public from well contaminations among other things from
mining. He just wanted to offer a sort
of training session if the BZA, Trustees or anyone else would want to come if
the Trustees would like.
Dan Stahlman asked about the landfill last Tuesday
morning and was wondering whether there was a problem?
Tom O’Dell from Club 3000 stated that the flares
were down on Tuesday thus the reason for the odor.
He wanted to commend the board for sending Bob
Anstine down to the EPA meeting in
He would like to see the Board request information
from the landfill, the EPA, and the Canton Health Department on the landfill. Strad then asked O’Dell if they went through
and gathered this information, what would he expect them to do with the It? O’Dell stated that he doesn’t have a good
answer as to what to do with the information.
Strad stated that we do care, and the Boards knowledge is limited on
such matters that are occurring at the landfill, so if we have a problem with
the landfill, we go to the EPA and the Canton Health Department. He appreciates him coming to the Board, but
what are we supposed to do with the information? How it is monitored, is up to the EPA. The grief that he and his family have received
over the landfill has been overwhelming, thus, he along with this Board takes the
issues about the landfill very seriously.
After a long discussion between Sharon Perrine, John
Heade and the Board, it was agreed by Mr. Heade that the inoperable car will be
operable by February 16th with Doug Baum going out to check whether
he is in compliance with the Township zoning laws at that time.
